About Union

Historic White Church

We are a small town in beautiful Eastern Oregon.  Union sits in an ancient lake bed in the Grande Ronde Valley near LaGrande.  To the east lie the Wallow Mountains and the Eagle Cap Wilderness.  To the northwest lies the Blue Mountain range, the infamous Cabbage Hill and Pendleton.  To the south are the Elkhorns, Baker City and the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center.  This is an area rich in the history of rugged pioneers - visionary men and women who forged a prosperous town out of the wilderness.

Union is an agricultural community.  More people in our valley are involved in farming and ranching than any other industry.  We are one of the few places in Oregon where you can keep a horse in your back yard - provided your back yard is big enough.  We enjoy our cowboy heritage and outdoor lifestyle.  We don't have traffic jams, rush hours or long lines at the grocery store.  Here in Union, the grocer knows your name and cuts your steaks exactly how you want them.

And yet, we aren't without modern resources.  We have a tournament quality 18-hole golf course with a view to die for.  This summer, new homes will be going up around that golf course for those who want to wake up to a view of the valley every day.  We have a state university just 15 miles away in LaGrande - Eastern Oregon University.  We have DSL and wireless internet access and many of us telecommute to Portland, Salem and even as far away as Florida.  We have excellent cell phone service.  We have an incredible school district where children have small classes and personal attention.  We have a medical clinic with a dentist on staff, a wonderful pharmacy, a great hardware store, a lumber yard, an outdoor sporting store, restaurants and many, many more businesses to take care of our residents.  A person would never have to leave town to get what they need.

Think we exaggerate?  Come see for yourself - but be warned - you may never want to leave!

10 Things To Do In Historic Union

The Commercial Club partnered with Union United Inc. over the last few months to put together an economic development project funded by a US Dept. of Agriculture Rural Business Opportunity Grant (RBOG).  We hired NE Oregon Economic Development to do a study of our existing infrastructure and to assess our most promising economic opportunities.  Vicki Duggar from the Oregon Downtown Development Association toured our city and did an assessment of our assets and opportunities.  She came back and told us that we have a very desirable destination for tourists looking for an experience vacation.  We have a fascinating local history, a great museum, and a beautiful small town with friendly people.  You can read more about her assessment by clicking this link:  Historic Downtown Revival Grant.  Here are the 10 Things to Do In Historic Union from her report:

1.  Attend a Do-dah parade, then race a duck down Catherine Creek at the Grassroots Festival.

2.  Join 3000 of your closest friends at the historic Union Hotel at Eastern Oregon's BEST Haunted House during Fright Night.

3.  Enjoy the best view in Union County while playing a round of golf at the Buffalo Peak Golf Course.

4.  See saddles being made by hand.

5.  Learn  how cowboys lived 100 years ago at our outstanding museum.

6.  Have a great time at Eastern Oregon's oldest and largest stock show and rodeo.

7.  Have your family portrait done in Wild West Costumes.

8.  Visit a pioneer cemetery that is so popular a wedding was recently held there.

9.  Drive a golf cart or ATV on city streets without getting a ticket!

We invite visitors to come see what you're missing if you've never been to Union - once you come, you may never want to leave.
