Union offers a unique lifestyle in a beautiful setting.  We encourage those who are interested in setting up a business to come to Union and see for yourself.  After the arrival of our windmill project and the development of the Buffalo Peak Golf Course, we are seeing more traffic through town every day.  It's the perfect time for anyone with the desire to open a retail shop, restaurant or bed & breakfast to take action.  We are finding that there is a huge draw for antiques and resale shops.  People from 3 counties come regularly to shop in the 2 shops we have now - imagine the draw if a few more enterprising individuals decided to set up shop!

Business Opportunities:

Historic Downtown Union:
The historic buildings in Union are a source of great pride for us.  They have endured since the time of the Civil War.  Some are in great shape, others need work and a few are in the process of being lovingly renovated.  Many of the buildings are on the National Historic Registry.  Two of the registered buildings are for sale - The Union Tavern building and the D&D Restaurant.  There aren't many places left in the United States where you can get  commercial property for the square-foot price of these buildings.  When you add that to the potential for Union to become a tourism hot-spot in Union County - well, you do the math.  If you aren't in the market to buy, there are also a few commercial spaces for rent.  Need help finding what you want?  Send us an e-mail and we will get you help to navigate the local process.

The Union Tavern.  At one time, this building had skating and dancing in the huge upstairs room.  Currently, it has been gutted in preparation for remodeling.  The person who restores this essential piece of Union history will need some funding to remodel.  There has been some thought about putting a micro-brewery on this site - which would be a great use for the property and a tremendous draw to bring people into downtown Union.

The property is being handled by Valley Realty in Island City. 541-963-4174.

This elegant old building has been a restaurant for many years.  There is an apartment upstairs where the owners live, or that can be rented out for a little extra income.  There is a bar in the rear of the restaurant and a separate entrance for lounge patrons.  Sadly, it is currently unoccupied, leaving Union with very few dining choices.  It is being handled by NE Oregon Economic Development.  They are asking $149,000 - a great price for a piece of Union history and an opportunity to make a living in a beautiful, friendly community.
The Hut is the place where the locals go to hang out together.  It is not an historic building, but it's a very well-known part of Union.  During the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, the owners set up a beer garden and served a full house from six in the morning until 2AM.  There is a bar in the back with a separate entrance for lounge patrons.  There are currently renters who are operating the business, so the doors are still open.  The building is being sold as part of an estate and they are asking $150,000.  You can contact any Union County realtor for more information about this business.
Crafty Ways is an historic building that has been many things over the years.  Most recently it was the home of our local on-line newspaper and a place where you could get some help with your computer, pick up some office or art supplies and get copies made.  They did some work with scrapbooking and the owner, Scott Morrison made incredible wood pieces.  They are asking $99,999 and the property is being handled by Century 21 Eagle Cap Realty in La Grande - 541-963-0511.

Commercial Property Around Town:
The Boulder Market is bigger than your normal C-store but smaller than a grocery store.  It sits on a full acre and has it's own paved parking lot.  They sell gas and have a small restaurant, Jailhouse Pizza which serves u-bake and baked pizza plus the best sub sandwiches in town.  The current owner has had it for over 10 years and it is a thriving business.  It is handled through Landman Properties in Vancouver, WA. Asking price is $395,000 plus inventory.  For more information call 541-910-0189.
Union's hope for the future is it's 30 acre Industrial Site.  30 years ago, this was the home of Union's lumber mill.  It has been cleaned up and has had two DEQ inspections, including a Brownfield Study in 2003.  It is part of the rural enterprise zone, which offers benefits and assistance to any company that develops a business on this site and creates jobs for local residents.  The current owner will sell one acre or all 30 and is asking $10,000 per acre.

Interested parties can call Union's City Administrator at 541-562-5197 for more information on the site and local building requirements.

Where else can you have a business and be neighbors with the mountains and the local mule deer herd?

Micro-Business:

The Union Commercial Club is in the process of obtaining funding to assist local artists and craftsmen in setting up their own business to market their work and increase interest in Union.  More information about that project to come!
